A New Hope

For a series of exhibitions exploring the theme of Opulence I have produced A New Hope
(Postcard # 1, Alpine meadow in blossom), a limited edition of 63 signed and numbered postcards.
For the Opulence exhibition with Latitude Photographers during December 2009 27 postcards were
arranged in a grid in the gallery space. The postcards were then given away for free to the first 27
participants on the night of the Private View and throughout the duration of the exhibition, with
the only condition that they replaced the one they took with a postcard that had personal significance.

A second Volume of 10 postcards was used for Boom Comes the Houses, Bust Comes the Art,
an exhibition in an abandoned house in Dayton, Ohio, USA during Easter 2010.

A third Volume with the remaining 26 postcards was spread over several postcard racks in
London Art Galleries during Spring 2010.

Drawn out as an alternative to the usual model of money exchange in art purchases, the postcards can
only be acquired by way of exchange or as a gift. A New Hope explores notions of the value of the artwork
and the idea of the limited edition; the project is a tribute to the postcard – a cheap, diminutive photographic
mass product, which nevertheless can hold huge amounts of personal value and significance.

The outcome will be presented in an Artist’s Book in Autumn 2010.
